HELIX / by Kenneth Tan

Located a distance from the city centre, the Helix purposes to be a retail neighbourhood that promotes a healthy lifestyle and the cultural beauty of Borneo.

Bicycle pathways weave along The *Helix’s perimeter and into it’s very core, beginning at it’s vibrant Botanical Gardens all the way up to it’s rooftop amphitheatre. Bicycle pockets hold parked bicycles while their riders dine or shop at this multi-level building.

A recurring design theme throughout the Helix is the “weave”, or ‘anyaman” in the native tongue. This Borneon endemic craft is traditionally used in all manner of household items and farming tools. The “anyaman” pattern is incorporated into the Helix’s soul, rendering into it a life-giving atmosphere.

Central at the Helix are Lifepods, retail lots with privileged visual and publicity benefits. They act as light cylinders, bringing daylight into the space and draw attention to it’s featured tenant or patron.
