La Verna Franciscan Centre
HOLDING X HEALING
In a world fraught with instant gratification yet lacking in true contentment, faster and easier access yet disjointed engagement, where high-yielding results somehow bring low satisfaction, we often find ourselves assailed by a sense of hopelessness.
Architecture has a role in this struggle to regain balance and wholeness to ourselves. By designing spaces that effectively separate elements of disruption and chaos, we can create environments where everything feels harmoniously aligned. This intentional thoughtfulness fosters a sense of tranquility, allowing users to experience generous moments of peace and to be able to take countless full, uninterrupted breaths.
The La Verna Franciscan Centre, commissioned by the Franciscan Friars, serves as a Holding & Healing retreat haven where the wounded and broken soul would find solace and healing. A key element of this project was seamlessly integrating architectural elements with the natural environment.
Situated on a site defined by rocky clefts, sloped mounds, and dense vegetation, the design capitalizes on these natural features to create secret gardens, light tunnels, and intimate corners for reflection. The placement of structures and built elements is dictated by the naturally beautiful colors and textures of the surrounding nature, rather than imposing on the landscape.
The main structures of the center include a Main Building, which accommodates guests with comfortable bedrooms and living areas, a chapel dedicated to prayer and contemplation, and a hermitage village for solitude and reflection. A stream meanders through the site, nourishing the gardens and ponds, further enhancing the peaceful and restorative atmosphere of the retreat haven.
