Borneo Rainforest Logde

The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a microscopic speck within the vast ecosystem of the Danum Valley Rainforest, one of the oldest rainforests in the world, a global biodiversity hotspot and significant carbon sink. Designing their new villas demanded a deep understanding of the local flora, fauna, ecological systems, and climate.

The new BRL villas are designed to foster family connections and enable interactions with natural elements such as light, rain, and the expansive night sky. Guests are provided with high visibility and immersive views of the rainforest canopy, the rushing Danum River, and its inhabitants, including the proboscis monkey, various bird species, Bornean pygmy elephants and many more.

The conceptual approach of “Rewilding” was explored to emphasize how stays at BRL can reveal the potential for harmonious coexistence. This concept extends beyond the relationship between humans and nature to include our interactions with the advancing digital and AI-driven world.

Rooted in Sabah’s cultural traditions and natural landscape, the resort’s motif designs reinterpret indigenous symbolism through contemporary architecture. Inspired by ‘Nantuapan’ , ‘Hinsou’, and ‘Tunduk’, each motif tells a story of communal belonging, the cycle of life, and the enduring vitality of nature. Through thoughtful materiality, geometric patterns, and architectural detailing, these designs bridge ancestral wisdom with modern resort living, creating spaces that honour the spirit of Sabah while embracing contemporary design.
